On a rocky outcrop dominating an ancient axis of communication linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean in Southwest France, fortifications have risen and fallen since the pre-Roman era. Today, 52 turrets perched on three kilometers of massive concentric defense walls watch over the Occitanie (aka Languedoc) from a medieval fortress once occupied by the Germans during WWII.
