Due to a thriving agricultural industry, ancient Vaison la Romaine had a federated relationship with Rome until barbarians invaded and forced all to flee to the hills. When the Count of Toulouse attacked in 12th century, the bishop and his people sought refuge behind fortified medieval walls with a Roman gate.
